Shrek 2 - Feat: M. Myers, E. Murphy, C. Diaz
There are some who would argue this sequel is better than the first part, but I would have to disagree. It's better because of the first part. There are jokes that they simply would not be able to get away with without the original movie to stand on. Shrek 2 is full of jokes sure to fly over the heads of the youngsters (although they do throw in the routine farts and burps to keep the little ones entertained). If you've seen the preview, many of the jokes may be dulled for you. Perhaps the most amazing part of this movie is that there are performances that shine, and not just because of the voice talent. So many animated films of the past were noticed for their vocal improv-like performances (Aladdin's Robin Williams) or strong story (The Iron Giant, The Lion King). Here, something different is happening. Antonio Banderas does shine as the merciless assassin Puss in Boots, but the actual on screen kitty steals the show. There is a true synergy at work. Eddie Murphy's donkey gesticulates, mugs, and generally chews the scenery in his lovable way, and not just because of what he says, but what he does. Pay special attention to the first family dinner scene, and you'll see it. These cartoons are acting.
The plot is light, fluffy, mainly an excuse to get the characters back in the public spotlight (and market the hell out of them--I've seen Shrek cereal, lotion, soap, dolls, shampoo, etc.) and work in parodies. Seeing this movie in LA made the city of Far Far Away that much richer of a joke. And that's basically where the fun in the movie lies - the blink and you'll miss it sight gags, the "did they really just do that joke in a kids movie?" moments...it all comes together in the end to be just treacly enough to warm your heart, and smart enough to jab you in the ribs before you tear up too much.
The modern songs don't fit in quite as well here, and the finale could have been anything other than Ricky Martin. But it's a movie you just have to love.
4.5 out of 5 stars
Stay through the credits for Donkey's big surprise...and the first excuse for Shrek 3.
